People are Strange.

My book about my flying career has now been out for twenty months or so, to largely really positive reviews. But I am struggling with the fact that a few people that I know really well, still haven't read it. One of them was a pilot with me for part of the journey, and I would have thought he'd be among the first to do so, another is one of our close friends who loves aviation and everything associated with it, these are but two examples.

I must say, it bugs me. What's it all about?

What do you think it means?

I think it means that they have psychological issues with either me, or the book's content, which they can't really know, except broadly.

OR their really lazy, don't give a monkeys either way, can't read etc

What do you think it means?

Perhaps they're waiting for the Hollywood movie version. Or if someone knows you well, they don't even see the need to read the book or see the movie - they have it first hand ... could be a million reasons.

I see one of them every six months or so, he insists that he's reading books in order, that he'll get round to it. Really?

If you had gone to the trouble of writing not one, but two books, and a good friend hadn't read either of them, don't you think that you'd be slightly annoyed? I'm talking about someone whose known me well for some decades, not a few years or casually.

Well I've not written anything - apart from the garbage I post on here - so I can't really relate to the situation. I've occasionally considered writing something of book length, but I wouldn't have any idea of who my target audience might be. Sometimes I think I might write something targetted toward those who know me. Other times I think they'd be the last people in the world that I'd be addressing, I might want to avoid anyone I know reading what I write. Who can say? I'm out of my depth here.

Still, I think maybe Steve you need to chill out a little on this, just let it be what it is.

Haha
I guess I can think of a few reasons:
1) they don't read much and gettIng around to it is taking a while;
2) they're very busy and ditto 1;
3) they're not interested and are too polite to say;
4) they're not interested and don't want to hurt your feelings (let's face it you're touchy lol (joke));
5) they haven't really bought the book;
6) they lost the book;
7) they read it and hated it;
8) they read some of it and it didn't chime with them;
9) they're reading other stuff and can't do it justice yet.

Which one you prefer is probably a function of your degree of paranoia, narcissism and need for approval :)

I've read a couple books by people I knew that were, frankly, dreadful.

As an aside, what did you write it for?

I don't think my books dreadful by any means, unless people are lying through their teeth.

I understand that some non-pilots might find it a bit too technical, but it wasn't really written for them.

14 out of 16 five star reviews on Amazon uk. Some of them are mates, but not all. Not so good on the American site, but it's oriented to British airlines.
