Just Curious

Hello All:

I'm new to this forum. Although I've had Skeptiko on my radar for 3-4 years now.

Do any of you know whether Alex has ever interviewed Neil deGrasse Tyson? It would be a fantastic interview. Of course, if one would first have to get Tyson to agree to an interview.

But... I thought I'd ask any way ... just in case there's an interview out there that I missed.

Thanks In advance:

Rose

I don't think so. I've gone back pretty far and listened to most of his interviews and didn't see one with NDT. I think NDT would consider himself far too important to be on such a lowly podcast such as Skeptiko.

But I'm only speculating. I'm not sure NDT would have much more to offer outside the standard materialistic dogma. NDT also has his own podcast but I've never listened to it.

Yeah - I've never listened to it either. I have listened to his Cosmos series. It's interesting enough, but I think he ignores a lot as well.

You're right, he probably wouldn't give Skeptiko the time of day. But, it would be an interesting interview. Dialog between opposites has its place in "turning the corner" to a new paradigm ....

True, true. Now if NDT came onto Skeptiko with a truly open mind, now then that would be something to listen to!

Sadly, NDT has never been a guest on Skeptiko. With Dr. Shermer's interview next week, I think there's a chance Tyson could show up.

Not sure he'd come in with an open mind, though, isn't this the same guy who declared that science had killed philosophy?

I fear an interview with NDT would go rather badly, since I get the feeling he is not the least familiar with the evidence of NDE etc. and have no idea of the issues at stake. Take a look at the following short video clip where he seems to think that he is making a profound point on consciousness. To my mind it's not profound at all, quite the contrary. (And from the look on Dawkin's face, even he thinks so too):

LOL - at the video -

But ... that's exactly WHY an interview with Tyson would be so fantastic. Only someone like Alex would have the strength to push back on what Tyson asserted .....

Yes, but let us remember there is greater victory in proving ourselves right, rather than proving the naysayers wrong. After so many interviews with renowned debunkers, I doubt Alex will get one to consciously admit they don't know what they're talking about. Even then, NDT's fans would say Alex twisted words and messed with the audio, which brings me back to the point of we should be focusing on the supporting evidence.

Just remember the Conye interview Alex did a while ago. The comments on that where pretty much that: Alex would ask the wrong questions to a respected guy like coyne, how dare he would ask him something that isnt related to evolution, bla bla bla. Thousands of people that never really cared for skeptiko came out of their little holes and expressed their dissapointment in alex. The audio thing is also something you can read about the skeptiko podcast on various "sceptic"-forums. I also read a few times that alex is trying to push people into cornes and all those things.
People will find reasons not to care just to defend their prophets. It could happen again with Shermer. His "fanbase" his pretty huge - i wouldnt be surprised if there will be some people that will write the things i mentioned above just to defend him against the "naive proponent that doesnt believe in modern science".

I have to admit, alex is hitting pretty hard. Yep, hes propably having a strong opinion at this point. Yep, i can see where the whole "hes driving people into corners" thing is coming from. But comon guys. Even at the time of the coyne interview everyone could openly read the interviews before that. Everyone knows how that podcast here is working. No need to be surprised.
Tbh, thats also why im surprised that Shermer actually agreed to do that. Although i believe Alex wont go in with some sort of verbal sledgehammer i still expect that he wont hide his opinion. Shermer hopefully knows that hes not getting on a podcast with a materialist.

Yes, I have to agree with you, when Coyne started calling folks woomeisters and Randi issued Pegasus awards, they left the realm of science and entered the world of politics, so sorry for the mess! Even I admit Alex approaches this with a very political bent,, but he was never a scientist defending a position, he was just a guy using the scientific method. Of course, he's now a guy defending a position, but I've never been one to support how Alex does things, I just like using his forum :p

Well, as @Sciborg once said:

"I find whenever Tyson tries to talk about anything but space he comes off sounding like an idiot."

Roses are red violets are blue, I turn dark blue when the pseudos say woo. They hear the explanations they want to hear. When they call the afterlife woo, they're really in fear.

I am of spirit
Swimming through electric blood
Time and time again

Or:

There once was a man from Peru
Who dreamed he had once lived as you
He woke up in a fright in the middle of the night
And thought, no, this has to be woo
