Slow response from Skeptiko site

I wonder if I am the only one experiencing periodic long waits to access this site?

This seems to have started relatively recently, and sometimes makes the site very hard to navigate.

Yes, sometimes forum pages just stay stuck in a 'loading' state forever, or load part of a page but not the whole thing. Happening for a few days now.

It is very intermittent, but I wonder if it could be some sort of denial of service attack - that just swamps the site with fake data?

Is there anything Alex could do?

David

I've noticed this too... no time to look into now, but if anyone has any ideas would be appreciated.

Someone should check the web traffic or the server logs.

Or contact the web hosting service and tell them about the problem.

The information related to a host name and ip address is publicly available. I traced skeptiko-forum to secureserver.net Is that the hosting company? The secureserver.net web site doesn't provide any contact info or any info at all, just a prompt to log in. Go Daddy is also listed I'm not sure it they are just for the name registration - if they are operating the server too, someone could try to contact them.

When skeptiko was being configured to ignore Tor addresses, it seemed like one of the forum members was trusted with access to the server - I don't remember who that was, are they still around?

Jim, I have sent Alex a message alerting him to this thread. I hope Alex can do something, but he may also have problems due to the lockdown. Would you have the necessary skills to explore the problem if Alex trusted you with the relevant password? I am not clued in about internet issues at all.

Unfortunately one site "www.off-guardian.org" runs some software to stop denial of service attacks (at the expense of delaying access to the site). I posted links from that site as part of the Coroavirus thread. That site has posted the views of 22 experts who disagree with the lockdown.

If they are reporting those views accurately, then the site is perfectly honest, and even if they are inventing these reports, this is hardly the right way for someone to 'fix' the problem. Unfortunately I don't know exactly when this started at Skeptiko, so this might be a red herring.

David,

I have replied in a private message.

I have apparently noticed such slow work on other contrarian websites, especially the ones dealing with anything related to "conspiracy theories".

Of course, maybe it is my own hardcore contrarian's perception bias... But I can't notice this on the mainstream sites.

Did anyone else notice such tendencies?

There is a Buddhist forum that has a similar problem I never asked about it so I don't know if it has been looked at. Maybe I'll ask over there and see what they say...

Yes, that's why I emphasised that I'm NOT certain that this is really the case, and would like to learn about (dis)confirmations from others.

So far no on knows what causes it over there. I'll up date here if anything useful come up.

I'm still experiencing slow navigation through the site. When I click on anything, even if it's just to log in, the load time is real slow.

But I noticed that this only happens when I'm logged in. When I'm not logged in, I can navigate the site with normal load times.

I have used Xenforo for my forum, and I assume the forum here uses the same software. There is a feature called "discourage" and it makes members experience the same slow load times, delays, etc. If this is not server related problem then it could be a problem with your forum settings. You can go on Xenforo support site and open a ticket. Have them check your forum settings.

Here's a link for more info. on their support service:
