Trump Consciousness

I think he is worth listening to, but here's my response:

Though there might well be climate "fundamentalists" who would sacrifice everything and anything to drive down carbon in the atmosphere, I don't know of anyone at that level, and I am skeptical that this is anything other than a straw man. He gave the example of the bear whose scratches on trees ultimately lead to carbon sequestration: but is anybody actually arguing that we need to sacrifice bears on the altar of carbon reduction, and if so, on what basis are they arguing for it? I just don't understand what this example is supposed to prove. From my perspective, there is a place for reducing carbon along with other sensible measures to protect and preserve the ecosystem, and I think most environmentalists would take a similar perspective. I don't really recognise this fundamentalism to which he refers, at least insofar as it leads to sacrifices which we ought not to make. Then again, I'm a bit of a hermit, so maybe I just haven't been exposed to it enough?
Maybe the climate scientists are actually having second thoughts?

As regards inviting the Taliban to Camp David, it was a peaceful gesture that conceded nothing, and it might have worked - indeed it possibly still might after a decent interval.
No David, its a bonkers notion that would not have worked. The Taliban is a purist interpretation of an interpretation of Islam. It is coalition of people whose primary aim is to rid their country of invaders and impose their values upon the country.

There is nothing to negotiate with them. They want the US to piss off. The US wants the Taliban to promise not to host terrorists hostile to the US and the Taliban will say yes, because it is a dumb thing to ask. They didn't know OBL was going to attach the US. Its a stupid war - the kind the US can't win - and there's actually nothing fight about. If the US had gone away after they got OBL the result would be the same.

If the US pulls out of Afghanistan the place will likely turn to shit, but that is not for the US to say. It has been monumentally stupid over Afghanistan because it can't get over 9/11 and has developed a ridiculous myth that the Taliban was implicated. It wasn't. It was not a co-participant. That was known post 9/11, but not in the US, apparently. The subject was widely debated and discussed in Australian, and, no doubt elsewhere.

If T did actually invite the Taliban to Camp David during the same week 9/11 was being remembered it was a monumentally dumb thing to do - period. The best case scenario was that the Taliban agreed to all that was put to them - with no intent to comply because it was a dishonorable deal.

It seems clear to most folk with a grasp of geopolitics that what T wanted was a photo op to boost his campaign chances - and nothing else.

It was a stupid dumb move, and the only people who will say otherwise are T apologists.

Unsurprisingly, I totally disagree with your assessment.

The Taliban/Muslims of that stripe are highly symbolic people (attacking the World Trade Towers the Pentagon and, presumably, the white house or capitol was, itself, a symbolic act). Setting the meeting for 911 provides an atmosphere of seriousness. It's a way of saying, "The reason we are here together today is obvious and the Taliban played a role in that infamy". The Taliban are not babies. They can be addressed directly like men; even if symbolically.

And, yes, the Taliban did have a role in the 911 attacks. They harbored Bin Laden and his crew. The USA asked for Bin Laden to be turned over and Taliban refused (actually, they made some ridiculous demands that the US would never acquiesce to and that were stalling tactics).

There is a lot to be discussed. The Taliban will surely take over the country - such that it is -again. They will sure be thinking about executing anyone who worked with the US. They will surely seek to punish (maybe kill) any women who began to enjoy freedom while protected by Americans and Afghan allies. They will surely seek to rid the country of ISIS too (a good thing) as ISIS is competing with the Taliban for power.

Deals can be made with the Taliban. They can be made into "frenemies" with the right mix of carrots and sticks. The Taliban are not without economic interests. They certainly have political interests. This is a legit security concern for the US and, protecting all of the women and men that sided with the US during its stay there is morally the right thing to do.

When the BBC isn't banging one of its drums, it can put out some interesting discussions. In one such discussion, an expert on Afghanistan explained that the country basically consists of districts and towns that are perpetually engaged in low level warfare against each other. That meant that when the US came along, the leaders in one region would make friends with the US just in order to get weapons to use against their neighbours. The guy sounded exasperated that people didn't understand this at all, and put everything down to religious arguments.

I have no idea if this is accurate, but suppose that it is, and now you have the US offering things other than weapons - maybe they would take the bait. It seems to me that Michael is proposing a view of the Teleban - and many other potential enemies - that implies that you simply have to exterminate them all before you get peace. This in turn gradually morphs into the belief that 'enemies' that haven't even attacked you might be best exterminated before they get a chance. It is all too easy to see how this attitude generated the NeoCons in the US establishment.

I think this view of our (US and Western allies) enemies is part of the problem. We used to think of North Vietnam like that, and they actually won their war, but are they threatening anyone now?

Are these wise words of caution from Charles Eisenstein? I think he’s probably worth listening to.

That guy more or less says part of what I think. I mean, more and more rape is being planted to provide biofuel, there have also been trees removed in the Amazon to make way for the same plant. Also, one reason plastic ended up in the ocean was that the Greens said it should not be burned because its carbon atoms were deemed to be unsustainable.

The world does need the Greens, but they have become completely obsessed about one number (as CE says) they are destroying the Green Movement long term. They have also stayed quiet while countries like China and India - both with space programs - are permitted under the Paris agreement to mine more coal and open more coal fired power stations. Climate Change is a movement that is crazy on so many levels.

Why Won’t They Listen? ‘The Righteous Mind,’ by Jonathan Haidt By WILLIAM SALETAN SUNDAY BOOK REVIEW MARCH 23, 2012
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/books/review/the-righteous-mind-by-jonathan-haidt.html
The problem isn’t that people don’t reason. They do reason. But their arguments aim to support their conclusions, not yours. Reason doesn’t work like a judge or teacher, impartially weighing evidence or guiding us to wisdom. It works more like a lawyer or press secretary, justifying our acts and judgments to others.

Scott Adams, who in addition to being the author of the comic strip Dilbert, is a trained hypnotist. In an interview on FoxNews@Night with Shannon Bream on March 19, 2018, Scott Adams explained that hypnotism teaches us that people don't use logic to make decisions even though we think we do. (2:59: youtu.be/vLhcrbtbCEg?t=2m59s):
We humans ignore facts but we think we don't. The great illusion of life is that we're rational beings making rational decisions most of the time. But when you become a hypnotist, the first thing you learn is that that's backwards and that mostly we're deciding based on our team, our feelings, our emotions, irrational reasons, we make our decision and then we rationalize it no matter how tortured that rationalization is."

People overestimate how well they understand how things work. Direct evidence for this comes from the psychological laboratory. The great Yale psychologist Frank Keil and his students first demonstrated the illusion of explanatory depth, what we call the knowledge illusion. He asked people how well they understand how everyday objects (zippers, toilets, ballpoint pens) work. On average, people felt they had a reasonable understanding (at the middle of a 7-point scale). Then Keil asked them to explain how they work. People failed miserably. For the most part, people just can’t articulate the mechanisms that drive even the simplest things.

The arguments made by the other side in a political debate will always seem to be wrong, even if those arguments are defending a legitimate opinion. This can create the impressionism that the underlying opinion is wrong when it is actaully not right or wrong it is just an opinion.

I see political debates as debates between people who have chosen a side and then use reason to defend that side. But ultimately they are defending an opinion. Both sides have legitimate opinions and no amount of data or logic is going to make someone change their political opinion any more than it could cause them to change their favorite color or flavor of ice cream.

The issue of abortion is a clear example. Is the unborn baby a human that deserves the same human rights and legal protections as someone who has been born? That is always going to be a matter of opinion and "logical" arguments don't have the force necessary to change someone's mind.

The problem is that people have different standards for what is acceptable evidence. They are willing to believe any tenuous hypothesis or weakly supported theory that supports their side but cannot believe evidence when it goes against their side. So they may have a legitimate opinion but they end up supporting it with what seems to the other side as utter nonsense -their evidence may be good or poor but it will always seem nonsense to the other side.

I think our society would be a lot better off if this was understood better in the general population so that people could recognize that different opinions are not wrong or stupid or evil even if the arguments seem to flawed.

C’mon. Are you really denying that, when it comes to ridicule, he creates a target rich environment? I mean... Just look at him.
Sorry Malf, In kind, your just a racist xenophobe. I dont mean that but lets take this to a higher level. This is just baseless accusations. Silly really but dangerous because it demonizes and pigeon holes people who don't have your beliefs.

I think that Trump has had to do a lot of ducking and weaving because he had warmongers like Bolton on one side and the Dems on the other. The Dems seemed far more interested in opposing Trump than even issues of war and peace.

So I think he took on Bolton to shut him up, and maybe try to scare NK and Iran into being a bit more cooperative. I admit my heart sank at first when Bolton came on board, but actually I would have done better to trust in Trump's judgement. Likewise, my heart sank when he ordered those attacks on Syria after the fake gas attacks. He shut up the warmongers by sounding even more fiery then them, but actually the attacks were calculated to do minimal damage and didn't kill anyone - or maybe one person, I am not sure. Above all they did not escallate into a new conflict. Remarkably, he pulled this stunt twice, and Syria seems to be approaching a state of total peace at last. Contrast that with what Hillary had planned.

As regards the Taliban, I think Trump realises that if you want to negotiate your way out of war or potential war, you have to appear at least friendly to the other side. The line of thought that says you should impose conditions before talks even start is basically silly - but very convenient for anyone who actually wants a conflict. I don't know more of the precise details about this particular incident.

David
I dont know where you get your news from but its incredibly myopic. Stop just watching Fox and repeating what they claim. What I mean here is theres nothing that I can chew on with any evidence from this post. At least Jim Smith gives me data/info to back up his views. I respect that. I can chew on that and accept or find some opposing facts. Here, theres news reports and your interpretation.
I notice that the less informed people are and I mean looking at specific issues and there are myriad here in the US. The more they resort to baseless POVs. Cough Malf, cough. Im reading someones emotional content.

Trump is often not what he tweets when he talks policy. In fact he often tweets the opposite of what his appointees are doing. Healthcare is a good example. "We'll have the best healthcare" Its a lie. Its a fact that almost all of Trumps campaign promises were pulled out of his populist ass. OK so you fell in love with our grifter in chief. Hes a pathological liar. Thats proven fact 8,000 lies so far and counting daily.

Facts are available and I am open to accept opposing facts. Im not accepting your opinions as whats really going on.
As far as negotiating with the Taliban. What information, history, knowledge does Trump have about Afghanistan or really anything. He apparently knows everything by osmosis. Yes, thats my opinion but I can source it if you like. Lets start with he didn't write his own book. His ghost writer claimed he was barely involved.
He doesn't read his own daily intelligence reports. He spends hours daily watching TV. Have you listened to his rambling speeches? He cant even put sentences together and its just a repetitive jumble of jive.
He's spent a 100,000,000 dollars playing golf at his resorts. He barely reads. He just stated he never heard of a catagory 5 hurricane. Theres credible reports he ordered NOAA to include Alabama in their hurricane projections because he didn't want to be viewed as wrong.

You and Jim Smith apparently have created a Trump that doesn't exist. His administration is already one if the most corrupt in history. I dont know maybe Reagan is ahead of that. 21 Reagan appointees were indicted and pleaded guilty to crimes mostly bribery and corruption. Give me emotion and facts. Give me something to chew on David,

Ssssssshhhhhhh, I have a little secret.... (I don't care about anything but shit like this above. Most grown ups think this way.... just a little hint)

The simple fact is that we suffered greatly for 16 years as a nation - at the hands of complete incompetents who fitted nicely in a suit and allowed globalist Cronies to steal the wealth and savings of a great portion of our middle class from 2001 - 2016. The suffering which is about to result from this is unconscionable in its magnitude.

Jim Smith, the basis for belief/opinion whether religious or political is buried in the sub conscious. I recently read an article by Ph.D neuroscientist and philosopher Peter Carruthers titled There Is No Such Thing As Conscious Thoughts. My take of the article is all thoughts are basically derived from memory and content including emotional and are buried below conscious awareness. Memories are merely stored snippets of interpreted past experiences thus a kind of information not actual events. Awareness imbues thoughts and emotions with a sense of aliveness but basically its an illusion. I think it bolsters the view of an imaginary self and identity.

Often we have POVs we don't really understand why. So are we really even responsible for our views. Arent we also victims of our genes, experiences, upbringing and environment ?
Maybe that I just have them is good enough. I think conspiracy theories need this kind of blind acceptance. I understand that. I can see my own bias. I recognize how my bias causes feelings of separation. I see how my self identity is tied up in my beliefs.
So thats a start. I've asked myself if Trump were to support my personal concerns, would I support him. My wife says he's too corrupt. I would probably be ashamed of my support and chalk it up to the greater good.

However, he doesn't. He's the anti thesis of my concerns. He's crude, narcissistic, self aggrandizing, cruel in his policy making. He's a prolific liar, He's openly manipulative. He doesnt act like a chief executive he acts like his persona is the embodiment of the country. He's patently anti environmental his appointees are dismantling restrictions in wilderness areas, clean water and air rules. Loosening restrictions on release by companies on toxic minimums.

Diplomacy to Trump is not about results, its about his image. He declared without substance North Korea is no longer a threat. His followers fawned and Fox News crowed his accomplishments. It was all bullshit. He's F-ed up this trade war with China because its Trump as action figure making personal attacks on the Chinese. He trashed the Treaty with Iran, but has no policy except more sanctions. What about the integrity of trusting any future US negotiations with anyone, that's gone, destroyed. He's misogynistic especially towards women of color. I could go on and on. I haven't read Mike Pattersons posts. Im sure he's got tons of info there.

So is this valid? Are these just buried unconscious opinions.

How can I be a prophet when all I have done is summarize piss poor past performance?

I looked up your expert here. Ivar Giaever received a Nobel in 1973 in solid state physics. Thats great David but he's not even a climatologist. In our 2012 strategy for a key African nation, and
In our 2010 strategy for a key Asian nation, and
In our 2012 strategy for a middle eastern nation, and
In my 2015 strategy for a nation where women were thriving (for contrast), and
In my 2013 strategy for a key ECOWAS nations... our studies found that a teen pregnancy rate in excess of ~15-25% destroys a nation's fabric from the inside, and eviscerates the quality of life for women therein, in particular.
  • debilitated family economies
  • disempowered women for the remainder of their life
  • discouraged eventual marriage and family
  • incited anger and gang-like behaviour in the young men
  • reduced the average lifespan of the citizens by 10 years on average
  • became the impetus for a prevalence of poverty (> 50%)
  • increased the walk-in clinic burdens by over 300%
  • increased the incidence of physically damaging old world diseases (polio, malaria, cholera)
  • reduced the productive GDP and Sovereign Debt capacity of the nation by 40% on average
  • shifted resources from infrastructure development to social medicine only
  • stultified education and ended school viability at age 13 (no higher education)
  • split the food value chain into 4 tiers (deconstructive)
  • shifted the labor force to service males primarily
  • increases the role and power of mafia led socialism/warlords
  • increases crime and an inability to sustain vulnerable power and water infrastructure
  • increases crises of political and overpopulation/tribal conflict refugees
pages and pages and pages of stuff....

Oh yeah - and my name is from my blog, where it is used in the impersonal context of intent, similar to training and praxis manuals, for example 'The Journeyman Pipefitter', or 'The Apprentice Stonemason' or 'The Series 2003.C Mechanic'. In a blog which is being developed into a lifestyle and philosophical grimiore, that makes contextual sense... unfortunately in a forum, it sounds more like a personal boast.... (I am only on this journey, not there yet) :) But it is, what it is....

"Just two and a half years ago I hated Donald Trump and I feared all of you.
I'm a gay man and the liberal media that I trusted told me to be afraid.
They labeled all of you a small fringe extremist sect who had become swept up and hypnotized by a charismatic bigot who hates basically anyone who isn't a straight white man or a Russian.

My journey away from the left began with the jarring realization that the media I trusted lied about Donald Trump mocking a reporter's disability and was completed many months after research and opening my eyes to the ongoing manipulation of fear, insinuations of bigotry, and racism, and divisive tactics relentlessly employed by the liberal media to control minorities in this country and their political allies.
...
I put out a six minute video detailing everything I found unacceptable about liberalism and the Democrat Party and I launched the walk away campaign.

Hello Cincinnati. They run a tight ship around here so let's jump right in.

Just two and a half years ago I hated Donald Trump and I feared all of you.

I'm a gay man and the liberal media that I trusted told me to be afraid.

They labeled all of you a small fringe extremist sect who had become swept up and hypnotized by a charismatic bigot who hates basically anyone who isn't a straight white man or a Russian.

It's not their job to report real news or bring truthful useful information to the American people.

No their job is to create hatred and mistrust toward President Trump and his supporters.

Why? Because the majority of media in this country do their work not as objective journalists but as a propaganda arm for the Democrat Party.

My journey away from the left began with the jarring realization that the media I trusted lied about Donald Trump mocking a reporter's disability and was completed many months after research and opening my eyes to the ongoing manipulation of fear insinuations of bigotry and racism and divisive tactics relentlessly employed by the liberal media to control minorities in this country and their political allies.

As I began to change I lost the majority of my friends job opportunities and my sense of security and what had up until that point been a constant in my life.

By early 2018 I had had enough and I decided it was time to tell the world I'm here I'm conservative get used to it.

But I knew I wasn't alone. I knew that what was keeping hundreds of thousands if not millions of people afraid of walking away from the Democrat Party was fear. So I thought okay let's form a network of support. Let's all walk away from the left together. I put out a six minute video detailing everything I found unacceptable about liberalism and the Democrat Party and I launched the walk away campaign.

I took a deep breath and stepped forward pioneering the concept of a movement to break the chains of the Democrat Party. Tens of thousands of testimonials began hitting the web from black, Hispanic, Muslim, Asian, and white Americans. Men, women, LGBT.

Walk away now has half a million strong who have joined our movement on all social media platforms.

At every event we've done around the country we have successfully changed minority voter registrations away from the Democrat Party.

I will not stop fighting for all minorities in this country to walk away from the groupthink and victim mentality of the left and join us at the table on the right.

Now let me tell you something about Donald Trump. Donald Trump crushed a candidate in 2016 that was considered unbeatable and he will win again. But think about this: President Trump does not need to pander to minority groups to ensure victory but every time he comes out on stage he announces with great pride that African American and Hispanic unemployment is at an all-time low. He has recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. His administration has set out on a mission to decriminalize homosexuality across the globe, and eradicate HIV in the United States. This is not a president who panders to minorities because he needs them. This is a president who serves minorities because he loves them. And he loves this country. We are all in this together where we go one we go all. We are making America great again and this time it is great for everyone.

I am no longer afraid of the Republican Party and I'm calling on all of those in minority classes in this country to turn off the fake news and stop being afraid as well.

To my LGBT brothers and sisters I'm asking you to do what may be the hardest thing you'll ever be asked to do let go of the past. Forgive and learn to have faith in your fellow man again. Never lose faith that people can change. If I can change, anyone can change. We can change and we'll change hearts and minds and we will have peace in this country again.

And in closing I have a few words for the man himself. To President Trump, if you had never run for president, my eyes would never have been opened. I would still be a liberal. I would still fear and hate the Republican Party. I would still be a lemming blindly following the fake news. President Trump it is disgraceful, the hell that they have put you through. But you have taken it for all of us. Thank you for saving this country and thank you for changing my life

Walk away.

I looked up your expert here. Ivar Giaever received a Nobel in 1973 in solid state physics. Thats great David but he's not even a climatologist. I suppose you go to the dentist when you get your heart checked too. Heres an article about his famous 2012 talk from other researchers. https://skepticalscience.com/ivar-giaever-nobel-physicist-climate-pseudoscientist.html
Oh and hes also a shill for the fossil fuel industry.

Richard Feyman wasn't a rocket engineer, but he got involved after the Challenger disaster, and most people think he made a pretty decisive contribution. However, if you want a climate scientist, here you go:

I think the video starts part way through, so please rewind to hear it all.

If the conventional climate scientists were to debate with some of these guys (if they dare) I think the outcome would be amazing.

Please actually listen to these videos.

Almost everything we discuss on Skeptiko involves doubt about science. For example, scientists will tell you that there is no afterlife, that alternate medicine is junk, that ψ phenomena are not real, etc. Most of us recognise that some pretty sloppy, biassed thinking went into those conclusions. This isn't something restricted to consciousness-related issues, unfortunately it has gradually corrupted modern science over the last 50 years or so. I myself got a PhD in chemistry (a very long time ago) and went on to do post doctoral research. I then gave up and switched to software development. Part of the reason for that was related to this very issue of careless/biassed research. By now the internet groans with evidence that a great deal of science has become sloppy and corrupt.

Why does this happen? Probably mainly because science has become institutionalised. This is one thing Ivar Giaever pointed out - the American Physical Society should have reflected its members views - every one a scientist of some standing - and not made a collective decision for them.

Institutions like to pull in money, and if they pull in money from organisations concerned about possible climate dangers, they will bias their output accordingly. The same thing goes on in research done by or on behalf of pharmaceutical companies, and again for the same reason - money.

I had simply assumed that the Global Warming issue was real, but not very interesting. Then in 2009 I woke up to the news that WikiLeaks had hosted a collection of emails between scientists at the Climate Research Unit in the UK and several other institutions around the world. Why on earth would WikiLeaks - famed for its exposure of major banking scandals, torture in Iraq, etc etc - take an interest in a few emails between scientists? I am not a climate scientist, nor am I any longer a scientist of any sort, but I know enough to point people to those who do know and are brave enough to risk their careers to tell the truth.

Thanks ES, That took time. Appreciate your take. From this vantage point it appears premature pregnancy exacerbates the disenfranchisement of women and also affects the whole of society in negative ways.
I wonder what cultural and religious restrictions are placed on young women, from considering women as mere property to acceptance of rape and denial of proper healthcare and prophylactic measures. I originally posed this question after reading this article and plagiarizing the title. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/11/opinion/why-are-poor-women-poor.html?searchResultPosition=1

Since this is the Trump Consciousness thread, I will comment Trump, Conservatism in general and the religious right work to minimize women equality and keep women in a subordinate role and facilitate impoverishment. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/s...ex-abusers-message-rape-justified/2020616001/
