---Introduce yourself---

I just started a thread saying the above in a FB group called Human Consciousness Project. Someone mentioned "terminal lucidity". Have you heard about this phenomenon Phil?

Is that the phenomenon where folks who are near death suddenly seem to 'catch a second wind?' I have seen the occasional critically ill person improve somewhat before death, but it isn't that common. I think it is safe to say that we don't understand it, but it does happen. I don't work in a hospital setting any longer, so I doubt I will encounter it again.

What is FB? ETA: never mind -- facebook, right? I don't use social media, so sometimes I'm a dolt.

Sorry about JREF. We used to have some excellent conversations there. I left a few years ago because I couldn't take the attitude of many posters any longer. It seemed to have gone downhill over time. But, I also agree, we should leave this for another place as intro threads are not the place to trash another forum.

Well people with dementia and the like. On the face of it this phenomenon -- if genuine -- would seem to pose a severe difficulty for the brain produces consciousness hypothesis? I mean an Alzheimer's patient couldn't just recover their mental faculties just before death could they if the brain produces consciousness?

Should we start a thread to discuss? I think it is a very interesting phenomenon, and it may be more complicated than it appears on the surface. With dementia it would depend on the type and severity. With brain damage from other causes it would depend on the site(s) of damage. There is an argument to be made for autonomic changes affecting nervous system function and alerting a person more (the autonomic changes being a reaction to early shock) as that person dies.

Yes start a thread by all means. I'm not sure if I have enough knowledge on this subject though to say much about it. My forte is philosophy rather than neurology :) But hopefully others will join in too.

Hello.

Newbie to this site, old JREF refugee where I posted as Ichneumonwasp.

I hope this doesn't sound too stalkerish, but I found this site by searching for Paul A -- I was looking around for old JREF folk who like to discuss consciousness and found this place.

I'm a neurologist, so I tend to be fairly skeptical about consciousness independent of brain function. I am, however, open to ideas.
Hi Phil. I remember your name (Ichneumonwasp) from the JREF forum. I used to post there under the same name as here (fls/Linda). I'm also a physician (internal medicine - retired from clinical practice).

Good call to follow Paul here. I learn a lot from discussions he takes part in.

Linda

Thanks, Linda, I remember you well and always enjoyed your posts. I am excited to see you here along with Paul. We need to round up Dr. A and Mercutio.;)

Welcome to the forum! Great to have someone with your background on this site!

Hey Phil. Welcome to Skeptico. More minds, the better. I had been a member of a few forums, but none of the discussion were a direction that interested me and I realized discussions I started or would have suggested were rare topics, if posted at all, by members. So I took a long look around too and after following several discussions, I knew I had found a home, so to speak, with Skeptico.

I look forward to your contributions.

Greetings all, from America.

Coming from a background in finance, I won't pretend to be an expert in the sciences and spiritual matters. That being said, in the last year-and-a-half since I first encountered Kevin William's near-death.com site I've become familiarized with the basic knowledge suggested by NDEs and related phenomena, and have come to the opinion that our consciousness survives bodily death. I guess you could say I'm... *puts on sunglasses* ... pro-afterlife.

Anyway, I can't remember how I found this site a few months ago, but it's been very enriching. My personal favorite episodes have been the ones with Stanton Friedman, Howard Storm, and Nancy Evans Bush. You folks are doing a marvelous job pursuing the big questions, thank you, I hope I can provide something valuable to the cause.

Welcome GITHS.

I've read so many skeptic/atheist forums. Due to the constant name-calling and use of the word 'woo' I got annoyed. But there's this one poster who said something that I think is funny on one of the forums. "I believe that there is life after death. I do believe that consciousness continues after death. Just not mine." XD

Hello all

I've kind of done things backwards, having joined and posted a new thread in the Science And Consciousness forum, and now coming back here to introduce myself.

I've been listening to the podcast for quite some time. I'm not sure how I stumbled upon it. My specific area of interest is the mind/body problem.

Nobody introduces themselves here. But nice to have you anyway.
