Unsavory Avatars

Has anyone ever been forced to change their avatar? I mean outside of something that would violate the CoC of the forum regardless (pornography, excessive violent imagery, etc)?

I understand the worry of leaning into "trigger warning" over-policing though OTOH I think the original idea of a trigger warning has merit. Similarly communities are going to have boundaries and sites to have to maintain some restrictions.

There is some discussion of Rotting Flesh's avatar and username in the latest podcast thread. I didn't want to derail that thread so I started this one.

Given the user name I kind of expected a pretty gross avatar. That said, I can't tell what that avatar is supposed to be. Doesn't look that gross though...

I get that. But is he being forced to change his avatar?

I just think it is curious, that Alex, who clearly has very little interest in this forum, asks someone to change their avatar.

Well the forum has some standards of decorum, which is only to be expected.

That said, I don't think Rotting Flesh's avatar is so horrible it needs to be changed unless it clearly violates the Code of Conduct. OTOH, given forums are privately owned but publicly accessible spaces I'm OK with Alex deciding the standard.

Yeah. That's obvious. It's just we've all seen this come up periodically. And not just with "gross" avatars. Creepy avatars have been questioned in the past. It just seems rather silly and trivial. (Like this thread. :))

I guess more than anything I find it interesting to see what avatars and what types of avatars are questioned. How hard is it to just ignore an avatar?

On the other hand you can't have an avatar of a gigantic ejaculating penis on this forum. Although presumedly you can say gigantic ejaculating penis.

Personally I prefer not to see any avatar images, mostly I use custom code in my browser to stop their display.

It doesn't offend me and I don't think he should be forced to change it but it's not going to make me personally want to read his/her/it's posts. Then again I don't suppose he/her/ it gives two hoots whether I read them or not. There's so many weird things going on all over the forum, people arguing with themselves using multiple sock puppets, 20 thousand people in my inbox talking about all sorts of weird stuff ......how does that happen :) ?

Some forums have "private messaging", which is just a two-way exchange between two people. This forum has an extension of that, "conversations" which can have any number of participants, though someone must invite them, it isn't a free-for-all. As far as I'm aware, the only control one has there is to choose to leave, and then none of the exchange will be visible.

Thanks, Typoz. I don't mind them being there, I'm only kidding. Nice to see you back BTW
